How to Play 3 Man

The Dice & the 3 Man

Step 1 — Crown the 3 Man: Everyone takes turns rolling two dice. The first player to roll a 3 becomes the 3 Man — a cursed title that sticks until they roll another 3 and pass it off.

Step 2 — Roll & obey: On your turn, roll both dice. The numbers decide who drinks: a 7 sends a sip to your left, an 11 sends one to your right, a 9 is a social (everyone sips), and doubles let you hand the total out however you like.

Step 3 — The 3 rule: Any time a 3 appears on either die, the 3 Man drinks. If the 3 Man themselves rolls a 3, they get to pass the title to anyone they want.

Step 4 — Keep rolling: As long as your roll makes someone drink, your turn continues — roll again. The moment you roll a "dry" number that triggers nothing, the dice pass to the next player.

The Rule Sheet

Roll a 7 → The player on your left takes 1 sip.

Roll an 11 → The player on your right takes 1 sip.

Roll a 9 → Social — everyone in the circle takes 1 sip.

Roll doubles → You hand out the total of both dice in sips, split however you like — all to one player or spread around.

Any die shows a 3 → The 3 Man drinks 1 sip. (If there's no 3 Man yet, the roller becomes the 3 Man.)

3 Man rolls a 3 → They pass the 3 Man title to anyone and keep rolling.

Anything else → Dry roll. Turn passes to the next player.

Pro tip: 3 Man is a game of momentum. Doubles and 9s keep your turn alive, so a hot streak can wreck the table — hand those sips out wisely. And if you're stuck as 3 Man, pray for a 3 of your own so you can crown someone else.

More Dice Drinking Games

3 Man is the king of dice drinking games, but it's not the only one. Here are three more two-dice classics you can play with the same roller above — just swap in the rules.

7-11-Doubles

7-11-Doubles

Put a cup in the middle. The roller rolls two dice. If the total is 7, 11, or any doubles, they pick someone to down the cup — but that player has to finish before the roller rolls again. It's a race. Roll anything else and the dice pass on.

Mexicali

Mexicali

Roll two dice and read the result as the rules call it. A 3-2-1 (a 1 and a 2) is a Mexicali — the roller assigns heavy drinks. A 7 is a social, an 11 reverses direction, and doubles let you dish out the total. Fast, chaotic, and unforgiving.

Six Cup

Six Cup

Line up six cups, each assigned a number 1–6. Players take turns rolling one die. Whatever number comes up, that cup is either filled with a splash or drunk — alternate each roll. First cup to overflow ends the round. A great warm-up before 3 Man gets mean.

Dice Drinking Games FAQ

What is 3 Man the drinking game?

3 Man is a classic two-dice drinking game. Players take turns rolling, and the numbers decide who drinks: 7 goes left, 11 goes right, 9 is a social, doubles let you hand out sips, and any 3 makes the 3 Man drink. The 3 Man is a player chosen at the start — usually the first to roll a 3 — who's stuck drinking every time a 3 shows up until they roll a 3 themselves and pass the title on.

How do you become the 3 Man?

At the start of the game, players roll in turn. The first person to roll a 3 on either die becomes the 3 Man. From then on, every time a 3 appears, the 3 Man drinks. The only way out is to roll a 3 on your own turn — then you pass the title to whoever you want and keep rolling.

How many players do you need?

3 Man plays best with 3 to 8 players — you need at least three so "left" and "right" actually mean someone different. Everyone shares one screen and takes turns rolling. Four to six is the sweet spot; any more and the turns drag.

Do I need real dice?

No. This is the digital version of 3 Man — two virtual dice roll right on your screen, the app calls out who drinks, and the 3 Man title is tracked automatically. No dice to lose under the couch, no arguing over the rules, no cleanup. Just your phone and your drinks.

What are the 7 11 doubles rules?

In 7-11-Doubles, you roll two dice and watch for three triggers: a total of 7, a total of 11, or any doubles. Hit one and you pick a player to drink — usually chugging a center cup — but they have to finish before you roll again. It's a head-to-head race inside a dice game, and it gets messy fast.
