Civil War
Drinking Game

Civil War is a 3v3 pong-style drinking game that combines speed, accuracy, and teamwork into one chaotic, fast-paced battle. Two teams face off across a table with cups arranged in triangle formations. Players race to bounce balls into the opposing team's cups while defending their own. When a ball sinks, that cup is removed - and the pace only gets faster as the game goes on. It is the drinking game equivalent of a sprint: short, explosive, and over before you can catch your breath.

Think of it as the lovechild of Beer Pong and Flip Cup, with the aggression turned up. Civil War is perfect for parties where you want maximum action in minimum time. It is also a staple event in Beer Olympics tournaments - learn the rules here, then take it to the tournament bracket.

Team Battle

What You Need

Players: 6 players total, split into two teams of 3. Each team lines up on one side of the table. Players take positions behind their cups and rotate in after each turn.

Equipment: A long table, 12 plastic cups (6 per side), 2 ping pong balls, beer or non-alcoholic substitute, and a rinse cup of water. Some groups use solo cups for better visibility.

The goal: Be the first team to eliminate all of the opposing team's cups by bouncing balls into them. The losing team drinks whatever cups remain on their side. Games are fast - most are over in under five minutes.

Cup Setup

Get the formation right and the game flows smoothly. Get it wrong and you are chasing cups around the table all night.

The triangle: Each team arranges 6 cups in a triangle at their end of the table. The formation is 3 cups in the back row, 2 in the middle, and 1 up front - a 3-2-1 pyramid. Push the cups together so they touch. The front cup points toward the opposing team.

Fill level: Pour a small sip of beer into each cup - about a quarter full. Enough to drink, not so much that the game drags. Six cups at a quarter-beer each works out to about one and a half beers per side.

Table position: Place the triangle at the edge of the table closest to each team. The cups should be within arm's reach of the back row player. Leave the center of the table clear for bouncing.

The rinse cup: Set a cup of clean water beside each rack. Rinse the ball after every throw that hits the floor. Clean balls fly straighter and bounce more predictably.

How to Play Civil War

Speed is everything in Civil War. Players take turns bouncing balls at the opposing team's cups as fast as they can. There is no waiting for turns - as soon as you throw, the next player goes.

Step 1 - Divide into Teams

Split into two teams of 3 players each. Each team lines up behind their 6-cup triangle formation. Assign positions: the front player closest to the cups, the middle player, and the back player. The back player handles the harder angles; put your best bouncer there.

Step 2 - Start the Game

Both teams start with two balls. On "go," the first player from each team bounces their ball at the opposing team's cups. Players alternate throws in rapid succession - there is no turn order, just throw as fast as you can. When a ball sinks in a cup, that cup is pulled and the defending team drinks it.

Step 3 - Rotate and Reload

After throwing, a player rotates to the back of their team's line. The next player steps up and throws. If your team sinks a cup, you get the ball back - grab it and throw again immediately. Speed matters. The faster you get balls back into play, the more pressure you put on the other team.

Step 4 - Eliminate and Win

Keep bouncing and sinking until one team has no cups left. The first team to clear all six opposing cups wins. The losing team drinks whatever cups remain on their side. Most games end in 3-5 minutes - it is a sprint, not a marathon.

Rules & Variations

The core rules are simple, but house rules add flavor. Agree on these before the first ball is thrown.

Bounce Only

Only bounced shots count. Thrown or tossed balls are not allowed. This raises the skill ceiling and makes the game more about technique than luck. Bounces must clear the table and arc into the cups - no rolling or sliding.

Instant Reload

When a cup is sunk, the defending team must immediately drink and remove it. No delays, no pauses. The attacking team can keep throwing while the defense is drinking. This keeps the pace relentless and punishes slow reactions.

Death Cup

If a ball lands in the rinse cup (the water cup), it counts as a sink. The defending team must drink a cup of their choice. This prevents players from lazily tossing balls into the rinse cup and adds an element of precision to every throw.

No Re-Racking

Once a cup is pulled, the remaining cups stay in place. No rearranging, no tightening the formation. This keeps the game fast and prevents defensive strategies that slow down the pace.

Two-Ball Start

Both teams start with two balls in play simultaneously. As soon as one ball is thrown, the next player picks up the second ball and throws. This doubles the speed and creates chaotic, overlapping action.

Revenge Round

If the losing team has more than 3 cups remaining, they get a "revenge" round. They set up 3 cups and try to sink all 3 in 30 seconds. If they succeed, the game goes to overtime. If they fail, the game is over.

Pro Tips

Tips for Winning

Aim for the front cup: The front cup is the closest and easiest to hit. Target it first to thin the formation quickly. Once the front cup is gone, the back rows become exposed and harder to defend.

Bounce hard and low: A low, hard bounce is harder to defend against than a high arc. The ball skips off the table and into the cup before the defense can react. Practice your bounce angle to find the sweet spot.

Communicate with your team: Call out when you are throwing, when a ball is coming back, and when a cup is sunk. Silence leads to confusion, and confusion leads to wasted throws. A coordinated team beats three individuals every time.

Stay in position: Do not chase balls that go wide. Let them go and focus on the next throw. Chosing stray balls takes you out of position and leaves your team shorthanded. Stay tight, stay ready.

Keep the pressure up: Speed wins Civil War. The faster you get balls back into play, the more pressure the other team feels. Do not slow down to celebrate a sink - grab the ball and throw again. Celebrate after the win.

Civil War FAQ

How many players do you need for Civil War?

Six players total - two teams of three. You can play with fewer by having players throw more often, but 3v3 is the standard format. The game is designed for fast-paced team action, so six is the sweet spot for chaos and coordination.

How is Civil War different from Beer Pong?

Speed and structure. Beer Pong is turn-based with deliberate throws; Civil War is continuous with players throwing as fast as they can. Civil War uses 6 cups per side instead of 10, and games are over in minutes instead of the longer Beer Pong format. It is more chaotic, more aggressive, and more physically demanding.

Can you use bounced shots in Civil War?

Yes - bouncing is the primary way to score in Civil War. The ball must bounce off the table before landing in a cup. Thrown or tossed shots are not allowed in the standard rules. The bounce adds skill and unpredictability to the game.

How long does a Civil War game last?

Most games are over in 3-5 minutes. The fast pace and small cup count mean games move quickly. Some blowouts end in under two minutes. Budget about 10 minutes per game including setup, playing, and the losing team drinking their penalty cups.

What happens if both teams sink at the same time?

Both cups are pulled and both teams drink. Play continues immediately with no pause. Simultaneous sinks are rare but possible when both teams are throwing at the same time. It adds to the chaos - nobody stops to sort out who threw what.
