Ride the Bus
Drinking Game

Four stops, one deck, and no memory required. Guess red or black, then higher or lower, then inside or outside, then the suit — clear all four and you are off the bus and handing out drinks. Miss one and you drink and stay aboard. The browser deals every card, tracks the range, and counts everyone's sips, so nobody has to do the maths after the first ride.

Who's Riding?

Two to eight players take turns riding the bus. Each ride is four stops — clear them all to get off.

How to Play
Ride the Bus

The 30-Second Version

One rider at a time faces four stops. Each stop asks a different question about the next card off the deck. Get it right and you move one stop closer to getting off the bus. Get it wrong and you drink that stop's penalty — 1 sip at stop one, 2 at stop two, 3 at stop three, 4 at stop four — and your ride ends. Clear all four and you are off the bus, handing out 4 sips to whoever you like. Then the next player climbs aboard.

The Four Stops

Stop 1 — Red or Black: Guess the colour of the first card. A coin flip, and the only free hit you get. Miss it and you drink 1.

Stop 2 — Higher or Lower: Guess whether the next card beats the first one. Aces are high, so an Ace is the strongest card in the deck. Miss it and you drink 2.

Stop 3 — Inside or Outside: Two cards are face up. Guess whether the third lands strictly between them or outside the range. If the two cards are neighbours with no card in between, the app tells you — Outside is your only play. Miss it and you drink 3.

Stop 4 — The Suit: One card left, four suits, a one-in-four shot. Call it right and you are off the bus. Miss it and you drink 4.

Pushes & Penalties

Push (a tie): If a card comes up exactly the same value as the one you are comparing against, it is a push — nobody wins, nobody loses. Drink 1 sip, the card is replaced, and you guess the same stop again. The app does this automatically and tells you how many pushes you took.

Off the bus: Clearing all four stops earns you 4 sips to hand out. Split them across the table however you like — that is the whole point of surviving the ride.

Keep riding: The bus never stops. Players take turns riding until your group decides to call it a night. Sips drunk and times off the bus are tracked for every player.

Why play it online? The real game dies at stop three, when everyone is arguing about whether a 9 counts as inside 7-and-Jack, and again at the end, when nobody can remember who already drank what. Here the range, the pushes and the whole tally are handled for you.

House Rules & Variations

The app runs the deck, the four stops and the sips. Everything else is up to your table — agree on a few of these before the first ride.

Rule 01

Double or Nothing

Reach stop four and you can declare double or nothing: call the suit for double the reward, but miss it and you drink double the penalty. Takes nerve.

Rule 02

Water Rules

Play with water and keep your real drink on the side. Every rule works identically and everybody sets their own pace.

Rule 03

Group Call

The whole table shouts the call together. Anyone who disagrees with the rider drinks 1 — and the rider still drinks if the table was wrong.

Rule 04

Cheer the Bus

Anyone who gets off the bus is applauded, and the rider to their left drinks 1 for the privilege of watching. Petty, effective.

Rule 05

Last Rider Standing

Play three rides each. Lowest sip tally at the end names the winner, who gets to make one rule for the rest of the night.

Rule 06

Express Bus

Skip stop one for the whole table — everyone starts at higher or lower. Shorter rides, bigger penalties, faster night.

Stop 2 Is Its Own Game

Higher or lower is the heart of Ride the Bus, and it is strong enough to play on its own. If your table likes the second stop best, play Higher or Lower online — the same 52-card deck, the same aces-high rule, but a straight heads-up duel with no other stops to survive.

Ride the Bus is the gauntlet version: four calls in a row, escalating penalties, and one shot at getting off the bus. If you want the pure card game, Up and Down the River is another four-card ride worth learning.

Ride the Bus FAQ

How do you play the Ride the Bus drinking game?

One rider at a time faces four stops against the deck: red or black, higher or lower, inside or outside, then the suit. Every correct call moves you to the next stop; a wrong call means you drink that stop's penalty and your ride ends. Clear all four stops and you are off the bus and hand out 4 sips. Then the next player rides.

How much do you drink on each stop?

The penalty escalates with the stop: 1 sip at red or black, 2 at higher or lower, 3 at inside or outside, and 4 at the suit. A push — a card matching the value you were comparing against — costs 1 sip and the card is replaced so you can guess the same stop again.

Are Aces high or low in Ride the Bus?

Aces are high on this page, so an Ace beats a King and is the strongest card in the deck. This matches how we run Higher or Lower, so the two games stay consistent if you play them back to back.

What happens on a tie in Ride the Bus?

A tie is a push, not a loss. Drink 1 sip, the card is replaced, and you guess the same stop again with the same reference card. The app handles the redraw and counts how many pushes you took, so a run of ties cannot stall the game.

Do you need a deck of cards to play Ride the Bus?

No. This page runs a full 52-card deck in your browser — shuffled, dealt, compared and tallied for you. No cards to bring, no app to install and no signup. Open it on your phone, add your players, and ride.
