Drinking Game

The game where your own brain is the opponent. Draw a category, then go around the circle naming something that fits — no repeats, no stalling, no mercy. Beat the timer or you drink. This page deals the categories and runs the clock, so nobody has to invent a topic on the spot or argue about whose turn it was.

Who's Playing?

Two to ten players. Pass one phone around — everyone names something before the clock runs out.

Categories

The 30-Second Version

One category is drawn. Going around the circle, every player names something that fits it — and once something has been said it's dead, so naming a repeat is as fatal as naming nothing. Keep answering until somebody stalls or repeats: they drink, a new category is drawn, and it starts again. No equipment, no setup, and this page runs the clock and the category list for you.

Step-by-Step

Step 1 — Set the clock: Pick how many seconds each turn gets. Five is the sweet spot — long enough to think, short enough to panic.

Step 2 — Draw a category: Tap draw and read it out loud ("Beers", "Things in a bathroom", "Movies with Tom Cruise"). Everyone is now playing the same category.

Step 3 — Go around: The current player names something in the category, then taps Answered and passes the phone. The same category continues for the next player — with one more answer crossed off the table.

Step 4 — Stall and you drink: If the clock hits zero, or you repeat an answer, that player drinks. Tap Stalled (it happens automatically when the timer runs out), the tally updates, and a fresh category is drawn.

Step 5 — Last one standing wins: Keep going until you're bored or out of drinks. The tally on this page tracks exactly who has been caught out and how often — no more "that's your third one".

Why played online? Categories normally dies for one of two reasons: nobody can think of a category, or the argument about who already said "Guinness". This page solves both — the categories are written for you, the clock is objective, and the tally settles the score.

House Rules & Variations

Categories is forgiving enough to bend. Agree on one of these before the first draw — changing the rules mid-game is how the arguments start.

Variation 01

Speed Round

Drop the clock to three seconds. Turns stop being trivia and become reflex — brilliant with a full table, brutal after a few drinks.

Variation 02

Team Relay

Split into two teams and alternate. A stall drinks for the whole team, so nobody wants to be the one who blanks.

Variation 03

One Syllable

Every answer has to be a single syllable. Sudden, silly, and much harder than it sounds when the timer is running.

Variation 04

Rhyme Master

Each answer has to rhyme with the one before it. Play it with a longer clock — otherwise it's over before it starts.

Variation 05

Danger Category

The reader invents a category about the people in the room ("excuses Dave has used"). Skip the deck for a round and let it get personal.

Variation 06

Double or Nothing

Answer twice in a row to skip your next stall — but blank on the second answer and you drink double plus one.

Categories Drinking Game FAQ

How do you play the Categories drinking game?

One player draws a category, then everyone takes turns naming something that fits it. Answers can't repeat. The first player to stall, hesitate, or repeat an answer drinks — then a new category is drawn and the round restarts.

How many players do you need?

Two is enough for a duel, and it gets better up to around ten. It's a talking game rather than a card game, so it scales with however many people are in the room — just pass the phone around.

What counts as stalling?

Anything slower than the clock. If the timer runs out, you stalled — that's the whole point of using one, so nobody has to referee it. Repeating an answer someone already gave counts the same.

Is Categories the same as the Ring of Fire card?

Yes. "Categories" is one of the classic Ring of Fire and Kings Cup card rules — when that card is drawn, the player names a category and the table plays one round of exactly this game. This page is the standalone version, so you can play it without a deck of cards.

Do I need any equipment?

No. No cards, no dice, no app to install. This page supplies the categories and the timer; you supply the answers. Open it on your phone and start playing.
