Higher or Lower
Drinking Game

The simplest card drinking game there is — and the most addictive. One card is face up, you call higher or lower, and the next card decides who drinks. No skill, no setup, no deck to shuffle: the browser deals, tracks the sips, and keeps the score so nobody argues about the maths after a few rounds.

Who's Playing?

Two players, one deck, one guess at a time. Set the stake and start dealing.

Aces are high · ties double the drink

How to Play
Higher or Lower

The 30-Second Version

One card is placed face up. The player whose turn it is calls Higher or Lower, and the next card is flipped. Guess right and the other player drinks; guess wrong and you drink. Draw the exact same value twice and the drink is doubled. That's the whole game — and it's brutal.

Step-by-Step

Step 1 — Set the stake: Each player sets how many sips a lost round costs, from 1 to 5. Keep it low: rounds take seconds, so the sips add up fast.

Step 2 — Call the card: The current card is face up. The guessing player taps Higher or Lower. Aces are high, so an Ace is the strongest card on the table.

Step 3 — Flip: The next card is revealed. If the guess was right, the other player drinks. If it was wrong, the guesser drinks. Either way the roles then swap, so nobody escapes.

Step 4 — Ties double it: When the new card matches the old value exactly, the guesser takes double the stake. That's the card game's way of punishing a coin-flip.

Step 5 — Keep going: The revealed card becomes the new current card and the turn passes. Deal through the deck, then reshuffle and start again — the sip counter keeps a running total of who owes what.

Why played online? With a real deck someone has to shuffle, deal, and remember whose turn it is — and after a few drinks, nobody can agree whether a 7 beats a 7. This version deals, compares, and counts the sips for you, so the only thing left to argue about is whether you were brave or stupid.

House Rules & Variations

Higher or Lower is a two-player game at heart, but it bends easily. Agree on one of these before the first flip — debating rules drunk is the only thing slower than the losing card.

Variation 01

Streak Bonus

Three correct calls in a row and you hand out a bonus sip of your choosing. Miss the fourth and you drink the whole streak back.

Variation 02

Call the Gap

Before you call, both players guess the exact value of the next card. Anyone who nails it never drinks that round — a pure long shot.

Variation 03

Ride the Bus Combo

Chain it into a four-round gauntlet: red or black, higher or lower, inside or outside, then suit. Clear all four and you're off the bus; miss and start over. Play the full Ride the Bus online — the browser deals all four stops and counts the sips.

Variation 04

Group Mode

Play with a crowd: everyone shouts higher or lower at once, and only the players who called it wrong drink. Chaos in the best way.

Variation 05

Escalation

Every correct call raises the stake by 1 sip for the round that follows. A clean run turns into a real problem around round six.

Variation 06

Sudden Death

Lose three rounds in a row and you finish your drink. Use sparingly — this is the rule that ends the night.

Higher or Lower FAQ

How do you play the Higher or Lower drinking game?

Place one card face up. The guesser calls whether the next card will be higher or lower. Guess right and the other player drinks; guess wrong and the guesser drinks. If the same value appears twice in a row, the guesser drinks double. Then the roles swap and the new card becomes the current one.

Are Aces high or low?

Aces are high in this version — an Ace beats a King, so it's the strongest card on the table. If you prefer Aces low, agree it with the other player before the first flip and play it that way.

What happens on a tie?

If the next card matches the current card's value — a 7 followed by another 7 — the guessing player drinks double. It's rare enough to feel unfair, which is exactly what makes it fun to watch.

Can more than two people play?

Yes. It's sharpest as a heads-up duel, but for a group let everyone call higher or lower at the same time and drink only if they were wrong. Alternatively, rotate: the guesser faces the whole table and hands out the sips.

Do I need a deck of cards?

No. This page runs a full 52-card deck in your browser — shuffled, dealt, and compared for you. No cards to bring, no app to install, no signup. Open it on your phone and start calling.
