How to Play Movie Drinking Games

Watch & Drink on Cue

Step 1 — Pick a movie: Choose a title from the deck above — a specific film like Elf or Barbie, or a generic pack that works for any horror, Christmas, or Disney movie drinking game.

Step 2 — Load the rules: The screen shows that movie's trigger list ("Take a sip every time Buddy says Santa", "A spell is cast", and so on). Each rule says how many sips it costs.

Step 3 — Hit play: Start the movie on your TV or laptop. When a trigger happens on screen, tap that rule. Your total sip counter ticks up and the rule lights up as "triggered".

Step 4 — Keep count: Tap a rule again if it happens twice — the counter adds another round. The progress bar tracks how many of the movie's triggers you've hit.

The beauty of it: No taking turns, no reading questions aloud — you're all watching the same screen and drinking at the same beats. Solo, a duo, or a full couch, it just works.

Sip size: One sip is a small mouthful — about a shot of beer or a third of a shot of spirits. Agree on the strength before you press play, keep water nearby, and if it stops being fun, stop playing.

Movie Drinking Games FAQ

What is a movie drinking game?

A movie drinking game is a set of "trigger rules" tied to things that happen on screen — a character says a line, a cliché plays out, a jump scare hits. Every time a trigger fires, you drink. Instead of taking turns like a card game, everyone watches the same film and sips at the same beats, which makes it perfect for a group movie night or a solo rewatch.

How many people can play?

Anywhere from one to a full couch. Because the rules fire on what's on screen rather than on whose turn it is, a movie drinking game scales naturally — solo, as a duo, or with a whole party. Just share the sip counter around (or have everyone keep their own glass and drink along with the count).

Which movies are included?

Built-in decks for Elf, Barbie, Harry Potter, and Shrek, plus three universal packs — a horror movie drinking game, a Christmas movie drinking game, and a Disney movie drinking game — that work with any film in those genres. Pick the one that matches what you're about to watch.

Can I customize the rules?

The trigger rules are pre-written for each deck, but you're free to house-rule them — skip a rule, change a sip count, or add your own by agreeing before you press play. Tap a rule as many times as it happens; the counter handles the rest. Your sips and progress save to your browser, so a bathroom break won't lose your count.

What should I drink?

Whatever you're already having — beer, wine, a cocktail, or a non-alcoholic stand-in. The rules count sips, not ounces, so you set the strength of each sip. Keep water within reach, pace yourself across a two-hour film, and if it stops being fun, pause the movie and stop. It's a game, not an obligation.

Want to Face Each Other Instead?

Movie drinking games are great for a watch party, but if you'd rather put the screen down and actually talk, our two-player question games are built for exactly that — face-to-face, no movie required.
