How to Play Medusa

The Rules

Step 1 — Stare: Both players lock eyes. No looking away, no blinking if you can help it.

Step 2 — Flinch: The first person to look away, laugh, or break eye contact loses the round.

Step 3 — Drink: The loser takes a sip. The winner gets to assign a dare (in Challenge mode).

The Catch: In Challenge mode, the winner can make the loser do something embarrassing while they drink!

Game Modes

Classic: Pure staring contest. First to look away drinks.

Challenge: Winner assigns a dare. Loser must complete it while drinking.

Team: Two teams of two. Team members can tag in if their partner is struggling.

Winning Strategies

Don't stare directly into their pupils — look at the bridge of their nose instead. It's less intense and helps you hold longer.

Breathe slowly — controlled breathing helps you stay calm and focused.

Use peripheral vision — slight movements in your periphery are less distracting than direct eye contact.

Pro tip: Play in a dimly lit room for maximum intensity. The shadows make it harder to maintain focus!

Medusa FAQ

What counts as "looking away"?

Breaking eye contact, laughing, blinking excessively, or turning your head. Even a quick glance down counts as a loss!

Can we use eye drops before playing?

That's cheating! The game is about willpower, not lubricated eyes. If you need drops, you're already at a disadvantage.

How long do rounds usually last?

Most rounds last 10-30 seconds. Professional stare-downs can go for minutes, but after a few drinks, expect rounds to get much shorter!

Is this game good for large groups?

Absolutely! In Team mode, you can have two teams of two. The losing team both drinks, and the winning team gets to assign dares.

Scoring & Variations

Scoring

Medusa keeps a simple win count. Win a stare-down and you score a point; the loser takes the sip. The app tracks wins for both players across the night, so you can play to a set number - first to five wins takes the crown - or just keep going until the rounds stop being funny. In Team mode the losing pair both drink, so a single point can cost two sips instead of one.

Variations

Silent round: No talking at all during the stare. The first person to speak, laugh, or make a sound drinks - the eye contact alone becomes unbearable.

Distraction round: The non-staring players are allowed to make faces, wave, and try to break the contest, while only the two staring players have to stay locked in.

Team relay: Two pairs face off, and a player can tag in a teammate mid-stare. The first team to flinch twice loses the round.

Change of pace: If the silence gets too tense, jump into Higher or Lower for a louder, faster two-player duel.
