How to Play Charades

The Rules

Step 1 — Act: One player from the acting team draws a word and must act it out without speaking or making any sounds.

Step 2 — Guess: Their teammates have 30 seconds to guess the word. They can make as many guesses as they want.

Step 3 — Score: Correct guess = +1 point. Skipped word = -1 point. Wrong team gets a chance to steal if skipped.

The Catch: The acting player can't use sounds, pointing at objects, or mouthing words. Pure physical acting only!

Acting Rules

For Movies: Act out a scene, use the title's number of words with your fingers, and indicate if it's a person, place, or thing.

For Animals: Mimic the animal's movements and sounds (yes, animal sounds are allowed here!).

For Actions: Act out the action as clearly as possible. Use your whole body!

Pro tip: Start with Movies for easy guessing, then switch to Actions when you want more physical comedy.

Charades FAQ

How many players do I need?

Charades works best with 4+ players (2 teams of 2). For couples, you can take turns acting and guessing, but it's more fun with a group.

Can I use props?

No props allowed! The challenge is to convey the word using only your body and facial expressions. Props make it too easy.

What if no one guesses correctly?

If the timer runs out, the acting team loses a point. The word goes to the other team for a chance to steal (they get one guess).

How long should rounds last?

30 seconds is standard, but you can adjust based on your group's energy. After a few drinks, 60 seconds might be needed for harder words!

Is there a version where you draw instead of act?

That is Pictionary, and we built a free one that runs exactly like this page. Play Pictionary online and you get a 150-word generator, an on-screen drawing board, a turn timer and team scoring. Same team-versus-team format — the clue just goes onto the board instead of into your arms.

Want More Drinking Games?

Charades is all about performing under pressure. If you like that, Pictionary swaps acting for sketching with the same team-vs-team timer. For more guessing and bluffing, try Two Truths and a Lie or Categories.
