Kings Cup Card Meanings

Ace — Waterfall

Everyone starts drinking at the same time. You can only stop drinking when the person to your left stops. No one is allowed to stop until the person who started does.

Two — You

The player who drew the card chooses someone to take a drink.

Three — Me

The player who drew the card takes a drink.

Four — Floor

Everyone must touch the floor. Last person to do so takes a drink.

Five — Guys

All male players drink.

Six — Chicks

All female players drink.

Seven — Heaven

Everyone must point to the sky. Last person to do so takes a drink.

Eight — Mate

Choose a drinking buddy. Every time you drink for the rest of the game, they drink too.

Nine — Rhyme

The player who drew the card says a word. Going clockwise, each player must say a word that rhymes. First person to fail takes a drink.

Ten — Categories

The player who drew the card names a category (e.g., "types of beer"). Going clockwise, each player must name something in that category. First person to fail takes a drink.

Jack — Make a Rule

The player who drew the card makes a rule that everyone must follow for the rest of the game (e.g., "no pointing," "must speak in an accent"). Breaking the rule = drink.

Queen — Question Master

The player who drew the card becomes the Question Master. Anyone who answers a question from the Question Master must drink. This lasts until another Queen is drawn.

King — Pour & Finish

The first three Kings: pour some of your drink into the Cup in the center. The fourth King: finish the Cup!

Pro tip: The Cup in the center should be a mix of everyone's drinks. Make it strong enough that no one wants to finish it — but not so strong that it's dangerous!

Kings Cup FAQ

How many players do I need?

Kings Cup works best with 4-10 players. The more players, the longer the game lasts and the more social it becomes.

What goes in the King's Cup?

Everyone pours a little of their drink into a central cup. When the fourth King is drawn, whoever drew it has to finish the mixture. Use your imagination — or don't!

Can we modify the rules?

Absolutely! The Jack card lets you create new rules, and many groups have their own house rules. Just make sure everyone agrees before starting.

How long does a game last?

A typical game lasts 30-60 minutes, depending on group size and how many rules are in play. The game ends when the fourth King is drawn.

Scoring, House Rules & Tips

How to Keep Score

Kings Cup has no points - the only ledger is how much everyone drinks. The first three Kings are harmless: each one who draws a King pours a splash of their drink into the center cup. The fourth King ends the round, because whoever draws it has to finish the whole cup. That means the real "score" is the size of the Cup - the longer the game runs and the more Kings fall, the worse the final drink gets, so every draw carries a little dread.

House Rule Variations

Thumb Master: Swap the Queen rule for Thumb Master - the drawer can secretly place a thumb on the table at any time, and the last player to copy them drinks.

Little Man: Tape a tiny drawn figure to a card. Whoever draws it must "move" the Little Man off the edge of their drink before every sip, or they drink again, until the next Little Man card resets it.

Rule stack: Every Jack adds a permanent rule to the game. By the end of a full deck you are playing a completely different game with a growing pile of nonsense rules - which is exactly the point.

Tips for a Better Game

Agree on a sip size first: A "sip" should mean the same thing for everyone, or the Cup punish becomes a lottery. Pour once, pour fair.

Keep a water glass in reach: Kings Cup runs 30 to 60 minutes. Alternate with water and pace the Cup pours so nobody tips over the line.

Know the sibling game: Kings Cup is Ring of Fire under a different name - the same 13 rules and the same center cup. If you want the digital version of this exact game, play Ring of Fire online and let the browser shuffle and track the Kings for you.
